AMY’S STORY

Amy is a busy mother of three who worked at the postal office sorting packages. She was walking the family dog who suddenly bolted when he saw a rabbit across the street one snowy night. Amy who is barely 130 pounds at five foot four inches was texting on her phone at the time and was immediately and unexpected pulled to her left side. An audible snap and a jolt of pain in her right ankle indicated to her that she was in trouble. She phoned her husband and he immediately took her to the hospital emergency room.

The ER physician who saw her announced that the ankle was broken and that she should sees a pecialist. “You may need an operation for that,” he announced. Amy began to sob as they had plans to go to Florida in two weeks.

In Amy’s case, her fibula broke at the level of her ankle joint. Amy was seen in the orthopedic clinic the next day. She was in a wheelchair, and her face plainly showed that she was anxious and in pain. Her husband was in the room looking worried as well. Amy’s leg was several shades of deep red and blue. The bruising was located along her heel, back of her leg, and along the tops of her toes. Her ankle was swollen and painful with any motion. Her tenderness was mainly over the fractured bone with mild tenderness over the inside of her ankle near her medial malleolus. When her heel was gently pushed to the outside, it did not move and this maneuver hurt only a little.

Although Amy’s ankle was tender and would be for some time, it was not unstable and therefore surgery was not necessary. This came as a huge relief to her. In fact, even though the ankle was clearly too painful for walking now, it would not be long before she could begin to put pressure and walk on it. She was given crutches and fitted with a removable walking boot—a Velcro®, metal, and rubber device that would control and limit the motion of the ankle while she began to bear weight on it. This would both eliminate the painful motion of the ankle while walking and protect the ankle from further aggravating stress and potential injury. Her vacation was saved although she would have to curtail long walks on the beach.
